Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons, which means there is always somewhere good to visit. The trick is knowing which coast is best in which month.
December to March: Peak season. The south and west coasts (Mirissa, Galle, Bentota) and the central highlands (Ella, Nuwara Eliya) are at their best. Whale watching off Mirissa begins.
April to September: The east coast comes into its own. Arugam Bay for surfing, Trincomalee for beaches and snorkeling, and Passikudah for families.
May to August: The Yala block (southeast) is closed for the dry season, but the cultural triangle is at its lush green best. Excellent for photographers.
September to November: Shoulder season. The west coast reopens, prices drop, and the island is lush. Some rain in the afternoons, but plenty of sunshine.
For wildlife, Yala safaris are best February to July. Whale watching on the south coast is best December to April. East coast whale watching is best June to September.
