Sri Lanka Tourist Visa – Complete 2025 Guide

How to apply for the Sri Lanka tourist visa, fees, documents, and the latest entry rules.

Most travelers to Sri Lanka need a tourist visa, which is issued as an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). The process is straightforward and can be completed online in under 10 minutes.

ETA Fees:

  • 30-day single entry tourist visa: USD 30
  • 6-month multiple entry tourist visa: USD 50

How to apply:

1. Visit the official Sri Lanka ETA portal at www.eta.gov.lk 2. Fill in the application form with your passport details, travel dates, and accommodation in Sri Lanka 3. Pay the application fee by credit or debit card 4. Receive the ETA by email within 24 hours 5. Print a copy to present at immigration on arrival

Documents required:

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay
  • A scanned copy of the bio-data page of your passport
  • A confirmed return ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter)
  • Sufficient funds for your stay (rarely checked but advisable)

Visa on arrival is also available at the airport, but applying online in advance is faster and recommended.

Citizens of the following countries do not need a visa: Singapore, Maldives, and the Seychelles. Most other nationalities are eligible for the ETA.

Extending your visa:

If you fall in love with Sri Lanka (likely), you can extend your tourist visa at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo. Extensions are typically issued in 30-day increments, up to a maximum of 270 days per year.

Tip: Apply at least 2 weeks before travel to avoid any last-minute issues. If your application is rejected (rare), you can apply again with additional documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the Sri Lanka ETA take to process?

Most applications are approved within 24 hours. We recommend applying at least 2 weeks before travel to allow for any issues.

Can I get a visa on arrival in Sri Lanka?

Yes, but the process is slower and more expensive than applying online. We strongly recommend pre-applying for the ETA.

Do children need a separate ETA?

Yes, each traveler including infants needs their own ETA, but children under 12 are typically exempt from the fee (still requires application).

Can I work on a tourist visa?

No — the tourist ETA does not permit any form of work. If you plan to work or volunteer, you need a different visa category.
