Sri Lanka's cultural calendar is rich and varied. Here are the festivals worth planning your trip around.
Esala Perahera (July/August, Kandy) — Sri Lanka's most famous festival. Ten nights of processions through Kandy featuring decorated elephants, traditional dancers, drummers, and fire performers. The final night is the grandest.
Sinhala and Tamil New Year (April) — Celebrated in mid-April with traditional rituals, sweets, and games. A wonderful time to experience authentic Sri Lankan culture.
Poson (June, Anuradhapura/Mihintale) — The festival celebrating the introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka. Illuminated pandals (temporary temples) and lantern-lit processions.
Vesak (May) — The most important Buddhist holiday. Homes, temples, and streets are illuminated, and pandals depicting scenes from the Buddha's life are erected across the country.
Deepavali (October/November) — The Hindu festival of lights, celebrated especially in Jaffna and the eastern Tamil communities.
Christmas (December) — A major holiday in Sri Lanka, celebrated enthusiastically across the country.
