Sri Lanka is small enough that three focused days can deliver a memorable first taste — but you have to pick a region. Trying to cover the entire island in three days results in a blur of highways and missed opportunities. Our recommended 3-day itinerary focuses on the cultural triangle: Sigiriya, Dambulla, and Kandy.
Day 1: Colombo to Sigiriya. Drive to Sigiriya, climb Lion Rock at sunset.
Day 2: Dambulla and Polonnaruwa. Morning cave temple, then ancient city cycling tour.
Day 3: Kandy. Drive to Kandy, Temple of the Tooth, botanical gardens, return to Colombo in the evening.
For a beach-only short trip, head directly to the south coast — Bentota, Galle, or Mirissa — and unwind for three days with day trips to Galle Fort and a whale watching excursion.
