Sri Lanka is a year-round tropical destination, but the climate varies significantly between coasts and the central highlands. Here is a practical packing list.
Essentials: Light cotton clothing, swimwear, a light rain jacket, comfortable walking shoes, sandals, sunscreen (SPF 50+), insect repellent, a reusable water bottle, and a power adapter (Sri Lanka uses Type D and G plugs).
For the hill country (Ella, Nuwara Eliya, Horton Plains): A fleece or light jacket for cool evenings (it can drop to 10°C at night in Nuwara Eliya).
For safaris: Neutral-colored clothing (khaki, olive, beige), a hat, binoculars, and a zoom lens if you enjoy photography.
For cultural sites (temples): Modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Most major temples provide sarongs, but bringing your own is convenient.
Avoid: Military-style clothing, camouflage (illegal in some areas), and excessive jewelry.
