Legacy of the Pearl
Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka after the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993. It comprises, besides the Brahmanic monuments built by the Cholas, the monumental ruins of the fabulous garden-city created by Parakramabahu I in the 12th century. The Ancient City of Polonnaruwa has been declared a World Heritage Site. The city is famous for its well-planned archaeological park, which includes the Gal Vihara with its giant rock-cut Buddha statues, the massive Parakrama Samudra reservoir, and the intricate ruins of the Royal Palace.
"Sri Lanka is a land like no other, where every stone tells a thousand-year-old story of kings and legends."
