Kandy Travel Guide: Temples, Gardens & Culture

NAVRO Travel Guide March 22, 2025 8 min read

Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka, sits picturesquely around a lake in the central highlands. It is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic — the most sacred Buddhist site in the country — and a UNESCO World Heritage City.

Must-see attractions: Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, Kandy Lake, Bahiravokanda Vihara Buddha statue, Udawattakele forest reserve, and a traditional Kandyan dance performance.

Best time to visit: The Esala Perahera in July or August is the cultural highlight, with a 10-day festival featuring decorated elephants, dancers, and drummers.

Where to stay: Theva Residency, Kandy House, and Earl's Regency are excellent options.

Getting there: 3 hours by road from Colombo. The scenic train to Ella passes through Kandy.
