Sri Lanka's underwater world is often overlooked but offers exceptional diving — from shallow coral reefs to historic shipwrecks and even the chance to dive with blue whales in offshore waters.
Best dive sites:
Trincomalee (east coast, May–September): Pigeon Island, famous for black-tip reef sharks and excellent coral gardens. Swami Rock and the Argonaut Wreck are technical dive sites.
Hikkaduwa (west coast, November–April): A marine sanctuary with shallow coral reefs, ideal for beginners and snorkeling. The Earl of Shaftesbury wreck is a popular dive.
Nilaveli (east coast, May–September): Crystal clear water, large pelagics, and coral formations.
Kalpitiya (west coast, November–April): Offshore diving with dolphins and the chance to see larger pelagics.
Operators: The best dive centers are PADI 5-star rated and located in Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Trincomalee, and Kalpitiya. We can arrange a private dive guide and equipment rental as part of your tour.
