Sri Lanka has become one of Asia's most popular surfing destinations, with consistent swells on both coasts, warm water, and laid-back surf towns.
South coast (best November to April): Weligama is perfect for beginners with gentle beach breaks and dozens of surf schools. Midigama, a short tuk-tuk ride away, has more challenging points. Hiriketiya Bay is a beautiful horseshoe cove popular with intermediate surfers.
East coast (best April to September): Arugam Bay is the crown jewel — a long right-hand point break that ranks among the world's top 10. Other east coast breaks include Pottuvil Point and Whiskey Point, both more mellow.
Surf schools: Weligama, Mirissa, and Arugam Bay all have reputable surf schools offering lessons, board rentals, and multi-day packages. Most charge USD 30–50 per lesson including board rental.
