Built by the British in the 19th century, Sri Lanka's railway winds through some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Asia. The flagship journey is the Kandy-to-Ella line.
The Kandy–Ella train: This 7-hour journey climbs through tea estates, misty forests, and dozens of tunnels. Highlights include the crossing of the Nine Arches Bridge, the dramatic river valleys near Haputale, and the vertiginous climb out of Nuwara Eliya. Reserve a first-class observation car for the best experience.
Colombo–Kandy: A 2.5-hour journey through the tropical lowlands and into the hills. The Intercity Express is comfortable and fast.
Colombo–Galle: A coastal route that hugs the Indian Ocean. The recently upgraded express service is one of the most beautiful short train rides in South Asia.
Tip: Reserve first-class tickets at least 2–3 weeks in advance, especially for the Kandy–Ella route during peak season (December–March).
