Nuwara Eliya, sitting at 1,868m above sea level, is Sri Lanka's highest town and the heart of the country's famous tea country. Known as 'Little England' for its colonial bungalows, rose gardens, and cool climate, it is a refreshing change of pace from the coast.
Things to do: Visit a working tea estate and factory, tour Gregory Lake by boat, walk through Victoria Park, visit the Hindu temple at Sita Eliya, and hike in Horton Plains National Park to see World's End.
Where to stay: Heritance Tea Factory (a converted tea factory), The Grand Hotel (a colonial landmark), and the Stafford Bungalow.
Best time: February to May is the driest and clearest. Temperatures can drop to 10°C at night, so bring a jacket.
